The Right Snack Track

Snacking is the downfall of many otherwise healthy diets, but the good news is that your can learn to control this snacking quite easily. Also, even if still want to snack during the day, there are ways in which you can do so without killing your healthy diet. Staying on track with your diet when you like to snack might be hard, but it is worth that extra effort because it keeps your body healthy.

To prevent snacking, simply eat more meals. Instead of eating three large meals every try, try eating smaller meals every few hours. If you are snacking because you are hungry, chances are that you are using more energy than you are ingesting and you need the extra fuel. By eating 6 smaller but healthy meals every day, you will not be tempted to snack very often, but will keep your high energy levels.

You can also help to stop your snacking simply by removing temptation. Before you reach for a snack, ask yourself if you are honestly hungry or if you are just eating because you are bored, because the food tastes good, or because you feel compelled to eat when doing a certain activity (like watching a movie). If you are snacking because you are really hungry, than it is probably fine to have something to eat, but if you are snacking for another reason, you should try to remove the temptation. Simply rid your house of junk foods and do not buy these items again when you go to the grocery store.

Instead, purchase healthy snacks. Think about the snacks you are eating. Would they fit easily into a food group as fruit, vegetable, grain, dairy, or protein? If the answer is no, then the snack is probably not good for you. For example, carrot sticks (vegetables), yogurt (dairy), or whole wheat crackers (grains) work well as snacks, while candy, potato chips, and processed foods do not.

When you snack, remember to consider your beverages as well. Drinks like soda, fruit punch, iced tea, lemonade, and juice boxes can contain unnatural ingredients and lots of sugar. In short, they are high in calories but low in nutrients. Instead, opt for drinks that supplement your healthy diet. Choose water most of the like, or drinks that are made with natural fruits, like apple juice. Low-fat milk and sports drinks are also good choices. Above all, stay away from most kinds of alcohol. Red wine is an exception, since this can help your heart health, but any type of alcohol in high amounts is fairly bad for your body.

Diabetes: Could it be Affecting your Cat?

Cats and humans may not look much alike, but remember, both are mammals. Therefore, there are a number of diseases, disorders, and other medical conditions found in humans that are also found in cats. One such disease is diabetes. If you believe that your cat may have diabetes, it is important to talk to your cat’s vet as soon as possible so that your cat can get the right medical treatment needed.

There are two types of diabetes in cats, just like in humans. Type 1 diabetes is caused by the insufficient production of insulin in the cat’s body. Type 2 diabetes, on the other hand, is when a cat develops intolerance for handling the insulin. In both cases, diabetes can develop in cats of any age, but it is more common for cats that are old, male, or obese. There is what is known as secondary diabetes as well, in which a drug or disease causes diabetes, sometimes forever and sometimes for a certain period of time.

When caring for your cat, there are symptoms you can see that point to your cat having diabetes. These symptoms include excess thirst, vomiting, loss of appetite, weakness, loss of weight, breathing abnormalities, and unhealthy skin and coat. Your vet can then test your cat’s blood sugar levels and urine sugar levels. Both tests are needed, as temporary blood sugar levels may be high in cats that are stressed or nervous.

If your cat is diagnosed with diabetes, lifestyle changes are necessary to make sure that your cat’s health is restored as much as possible. Diet is very important. Remember, your cat should only get enough food during a meal as is necessary. Cats typically need food the size of one large mouse to be content—more will cause weight problems. Not only is the amount of food important, but you should also be concerned with your cat’s types of foods. Your vet can recommend specific cat food brands that are high in fiber and protein in order to control the diabetes.

Insulin, oral mediations, and supplements may also be necessary. Again, your vet can tell you what is needed, as well as show you how to administer treatment to your cat daily. It is important for you to monitor your cat’s health to make sure that the diabetes is in control and that he or she is staying happy, healthy, and comfortable. Diabetes is not the end of the world, in either humans or cats.

Cosmetics for Kids

Some parents don’t let their children wear make up or wear certain clothing before a certain age. However, what about plastic surgery? While this seems very extreme, many parents are allowing their children to get cosmetic work done even before graduating high school. In fact, some—most—are paying for it. Is this something good to be teaching a child? More important, is it safe? With children facing pressures to fit in, these are questions all parents should be asking themselves.

First of all, there are some kinds of cosmetic surgery that are done for children at an extremely young age. These are not because of a small bump on the nose or ears that stick out, however. These are real deformities with which children are born. In some cases, cosmetic surgeons operate on children as young as ten weeks old.

If a teen is simply concerned about beauty, in the other hand, cosmetic surgery may or may not be healthy. Before considering cosmetic surgery, a parent should see what is causing a teen to want the plastic surgery. Is there a true problem with your child’s appearance that his making him or her unhappy? If your child is having problems socially, perhaps cosmetic surgery is not the answer. Sometimes, the parents themselves are the reason teens feel pressured to get cosmetic surgery. This may be the case if you are overly concerned with looks or if you have offered to pay for your child’s cosmetic surgery.

As far as safety is concerned, the dangers of cosmetic surgery are the same with children as with adults. However, remember that a child’s body is still growing, even at the age of 16 or 17 in some cases. Because of this, if you get plastic surgery to look a certain way at this young of an age, your looks may still change slightly over the next few years. For that reason alone, some people advocate waiting.

In any case, if your child wants plastic surgery at a young age, it is important to be completely involved in the process. Choose a doctor with whom you feel extremely comfortable, and don’t be offended if some doctors turn you and your child away, even before a consultation. Some doctors are simply not comfortable working with anyone younger than 20. Find a doctor who is comfortable with the procedure and make sure your child is getting plastic surgery for the right reasons.

A More Youthful Look: The Brow Lift

Cosmetic surgery is used by patients all over the world to get the youthful look they want. There are a number of different procedures a person can receive when interested in looking younger, and these procedures can sometimes be used in conjunction with one another to achieve the overall look wanted. One such cosmetic procedure that is popular to help the patient look younger is the brow lift.

The brow lift, which is also sometimes called a forehead lift, is used to correct dropping brows and horizontal wrinkles on the forehead, so it is most popular for people between the ages of 40 and 60 who want to look younger. Both men and women can have this procedure done, and it can be done in the traditional way or in a process known as endoscope. Both achieve the same results—a smooth, younger-looking forehead.

If you are interested in a brow lift, your first step is to find a doctor with whom you are comfortable. You should go to consultations with at least two different surgeons in order to get a feel for what other people can offer, and at your consultations, the surgeons should be able to address your problem. You should be very clear as to what you want done and remember to ask lots of questions so that you are fully prepared for the surgery.

There are a number of risks involved with a brow lift surgery. It is important to remember that although it is improving your looks, not your health, it is still surgery. You could have complications due to the anesthetics or with bleeding during the surgery, and afterwards, infection is also a possibility. Some people experience nerve damage and can no longer raise their eyebrows or lose sensation along the incision line. Make sure you talk to your doctor about these things before your surgery.

There are two different forms of the brow lift procedure, so you and your surgeon can talk about what would work best for you. For most patients, the traditional process works best. Your hair will be tied back and perhaps trimmed along the incision line. A long incision, running from ear to ear, will then be made. The forehead’s skin is then carefully separated from the underlying tissue and lifted. Excess tissue and skin is removed and the incision is closed with stitches or clips. With the endoscopic brow lift, instead of one long incision, four or five smaller ones are made. A small camera is then inserted to allow the surgeon to see what he or she is doing, and the muscles and tissue below your skin are altered to give a smoother appearance. Both are outpatient surgeries in most cases, and within two weeks you should be back to work or school as normal.
